De/Constructing Identities

International Street Art Workshop in Prizren

The street art workshop "DE/CONSTRUCTING Identities" took place at the invitation of the Forum Civil Peace Service (forumZFD) and pax christi Aachen with support from the German embassy in Pristina. From 23 July to 1 August, 2011, 25 young people from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia and Germany met in the city of Prizren in Kosovo. Together they explored different concepts of identities through the means of street art.

forumZFD is committed to promoting inclusive identities and a peaceful coexistence. This requires that exclusive identity concepts are questioned and broken down publicly. In the workshop, the young participants were encouraged to creatively reflect on their own identities. Together with the Berlin street artist duo Various & Gould they created identity collages and put them up in public places in Prizren. Through the collages, viewers gain an impression of what concerns the young people, and are at the same time encouraged to reflect on their own identity.

"The success of the workshop is proof of how innovative, artistic methods in civil conflict transformation can break open rigid ways of thinking, stimulating discussions and positive social energy as a consequence," summarizes Jane Felber, project coordinator in the forumZFD office in Pristina. "Art is not only entertainment. People perceive the world, conflicts and even themselves differently through art. This change of perspective is still applied too little in peace work."
